Categories organize your catalog so you can find products quickly / see sales by category in reports / and your customers can easily browse the online catalog. They also let you apply promotions or discounts by product group.
Recommended structure
Think about how your customers search for products. A good structure has a maximum of 2-3 levels:
Electronics → Cell phones / Computers / Accessories
Clothing → Men (T-shirts / Pants) / Women (Blouses / Dresses)
Home → Kitchen / Decor
Create from the products module
Go to Products → Categories
Click on + New category
Fill in: Name (clear and descriptive) / Parent category (if it is a subcategory) / Color or icon for visual identification (optional)
Save
Create from a product
When creating or editing a product, you can create the category on the fly:
In the Category field, type the name of the new category
Click on Create category
The category is created and assigned automatically
Parent and child categories
Parent category is the main group (e.g.: Electronics). Child category is a subcategory (e.g.: Cell phones within Electronics).
When you filter by Electronics, you see all the products in Electronics + Cell phones + Computers + Accessories.
Move products between categories
If you created products in the wrong category: edit the product / change the category / save. The product now appears in the new category.
